Hi All
I have a home PC running XP and a new Laptop running Vista Home Premium
and would like to network them via a wireless modem so that the laptop
can be used anywhere within the house.
The PC is connected to the internet using one of the Ethernet ports on
the modem, the modem's wireless is switched on in it's setup, the PC is
the main computer and I would like it set to share everything with the
Laptop and visa versa, also I would like to be able to connect to the
internet with the Laptop from anywhere within range.
Could someone please explain to me how to go about doing this, I am
reasonable computer savvy so basic instructions should be OK, either
that or perhaps point me to where I could download the info.
Kind Regards

Windows XP has a wizard to create a home network. Since XP has it, I
assume Vista does too.
On your desktop, click start/control panel. Click to go to Classic
view. One of the icons will be for Network Setup Wizard. Follow the
instructions. That is how I set up our home network: My desktop, my
wife's desktop and my laptop. All three are hardwired via their
Ethernet connectors to my Linksys wireless router (IP 192.168.2.1/)
My laptop can be disconnected from the Ethernet and connected via a
WiFi connector from anywhere in the house. The modem is at IP
192.168.1.1/ That way the two devices won't have conflicting
addresses.
One note: You mention that your modem is both Ethernet and wireless.
It needs to also have a router within. Both computers are connected
to the LAN via the router and the router is then connected to the
modem. All computers can share data between themselves but you need
to specify which drives and folders can be shared. Some folders can
not be shared such as the "C:\Program Files" folder. I don't know why
for sure but that is the way of the world.
One other thing. Microsoft has a free program that I find functions
better than Briefcase. It is called SyncToy. It can be found at..
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0fc1154-c975-4814-9649-cce41af06eb7&DisplayLang=en
I hope this helps. |
