I recently installed SP 3 on my computer, everything was fine for a
while. Now, I can't access Control Panel. It says that it cannot find
rundll32.exe. I did a search, and I found a SP 2 version. Since it's
SP 3, I can't extract a copy off the disk, can't uninstall SP 3, can't
download one. I've scanned for virus's, spyware and have found
nothing. Does anyone have any ideas that short of a reintall?
Thanks in advance

You could try place you disc in the drive, and using the "Run" command type |
in:
sfc /scannow
That will check your installation and ensure the required OS files are
current and valid. It works sometimes and it's relatively painless to do. |

Try running sfc /scannow from a CMD window.

I tried all of those and none worked. Believe me, I spent hours on MS
site. I did finally disable my spyware, and then was able to un-
install SP 3. I may be a glutton for punishment, but I guess I'll have
to try to install SP 3 again. I don't know if it just doesn't like the
new version, or something else happened. Anyway, thanks to all for
your suggestions, it was greatly appreciated.

Terry, if you have kept up with the various MS updates since SP2, I
have found nothing in SP# affecting the home user. If you have a
business and are networked, yes. Else, save your sanity and don't do
it again.
If you DON'T have all those updates, you can get them from the MS
website by doing a Windows Update from your browser.

As for top posting, I hate it but if you will check the note to which
I responded, all previous responses had been top posted. I felt it

Use MS ERD to remove SP3 then make sure you clean up all of your temp files,
shut off everything in msconfig then re-install SP3 and complete all updates
then tune up msconfig to your needs...

Hey, I am always fascinated with the venom and lack of civility in
usenet towards top posting.
Maybe you could explain to all of us who don't get it, why this is
such a big deal.
Personally I LIKE top posting when the thread is very long, so I don't
hae to scroll all the way to the bottom in order to read a one or two
sentence response.
What bothers me more is people who don't clip out the long post they
are replying to so that I have to scroll all the way to the bottom of
several replies.
I'm just curious as to what makes you so venomous about top posting.
Please advise. |

Some groups (microsoft.public.windowsxp.XXX), albeit wrong, always top-post
because their MVPs are too handicapped to scroll down. Almost all other
groups correctly bottom-post. You should post the way the group posts.
http://www.caliburn.nl/topposting.html
I'd hardly call the accurate description: "stupid top-poster" 'venomous',
but I would call top-posting in a group that ordinarily bottom-posts
'contemptuous' ...wouldn't you?
If you "personally LIKE top posting", stick to the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.XXX groups; they're your kind of people. Bye
now... |

Most civilised people like to read a book for example starting at the top
of the first page working their way down the page and progressing page by
page until they reach the end. This also extends to magazines, comics and
usually newspaper articles.
Now, whilst people are free to randomly read different parts of a newspaper
in whatever order they wish I imagine they'd get pretty pissed off should
the article they were trying to read had it's information in a random order
and didn't make any sense.
Usenet articles are no different. Someone may come along with the intention
of reading what was written and maybe even contributing to it so others may
benefit. It's not a very attractive proposition should what they read make
no sense until they pick through the whole thing and arrange it into a
sensible order.
People that upset the natural order of things are thought of as dumb
motherfuckers, and rightly so.
Similarly, people that don't snip or snip inapropriately are also thought
little of. After all if you read something you want the whole picture, not
just some half arsed conclusion that leaves you needing to dig around to try
and make sense of it.
| Quote: |
Maybe you could explain to all of us who don't get it, why this is

|
Unfortunately, dumb people are difficult to explain anything to, if you
don't have enough common sense to understand that thiongs should be in a set
and natural order then there's little hope for you.

Either learn to use the computer properly or insist that people snip things
correctly. If things are still too long for you then you're not the sort of
person who should be reading that sort of article. Stick to simple stuff
where your attention doesn't wander.

Yes, you're correct it's usually stupid cunts who don't know how to post
properly that cause that. You should chastise them and set a proper example.

Top posters are generally lazy and unthinking, they cannot see past their
own post and tend to care little for how things should be done.
There are groups that are full of top posters. If you prefer to read
backwards then stick to those groups or find a forum about the subject you
wish to be involved with that also allows fuckwits to sort the articles in
reverse.
